BEYOND CLEVELAND Day trips an hour-long trek away

Yes, it can be terrifying to leave the urban environment. When the tall buildings and strong LGBT nondiscrimination ordinances fade in the distance, who knows how far you'll have to travel for an artisan pastry and hand-crafted cocktail? Still, if your gay agenda includes fresh air and wildlife more natural than the bar-dwelling otter, these fabulous spots are within an hour or so of downtown Cleveland.

AKRON

Travel south to Akron (outinakron.org) where you'll find Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens (stayhywet.org), the stunning 70-acre home of Goodyear founder F.A. Seiberling. The 65-room Manor House is surrounded by spectacular gardens from mid-April through October, and is transformed into a charming holiday throwback in December. (Call from January to March, when it may be closed for refurbishing.)

Also down that direction is the Akron Art Museum, with its gorgeous glassenclosed, recent expansion that more than tripled the institution's space (akronartmuseum.org). The museum specializes in art created in the past 150 years.

LAKE ERIE ISLANDS

Out west are the Lake Erie Islands (shoresandislands.com),

a great summer destination accessible via ferry or plane.

Park your car for the weekend and rent a bicycle for shopping, dining and exploring nature. (Day trips are popular, although lodging is available for overnighters.) They're perfect for groups of friends who want to relax with a refreshing drink

while enjoying the sparkling lake views. Try the Kelley's Island Venture Resort (kiventureresort.com) for

luxury suites overlooking the pool and gorgeous views of the lake.

GENEVA ON THE LAKE

Out east in Ashtabula County is the old-school resort community of Geneva-on-the-Lake (visitgenevaonthelake.com). Flash back to your (or your grandparents') childhood by feeding coins into the video arcades, playing miniature golf and strolling with a hand-scooped ice cream cone. Then book some time at the Lodge at Geneva-on-theLake (thelodgeatgeneva.com) where you can lounge by the pool, hop on the shuttle to local wineries or enjoy a meal in the Horizons Restaurant.
